Urban development. The U.S. Conference of Mayors, through its Wells Fargo-funded CommunityWINS program, is offering grants for nonprofits working with mayors on efforts to promote prosperity in urban communities. Mayors may recommend up to three programs in their cities that address neighborhood stabilization, economic development, or job creation. Six grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $50,000 to $300,000; the deadline to apply is March 17.Literacy. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports reading programs offered by nonprofits, educational institutions, and libraries in communities served by the retail chain in 43 states. Grants are offered for projects in the areas of adult literacy, family literacy, and summer-reading programs for people with learning disabilities and students reading below grade level.
